It’s back to work for most of us after the nice, extended holiday. Of course what did we come back to? The most epic super duper cyclone ever to make its presence known in New Jersey. OK, so technically it is called a “Bomb Cyclone” and that is even more awesome! All jokes aside, this has been a pretty serious storm for most of the east coast. I mean, there are literally iguanas falling out of the trees in Florida because of frigid temps.
What is a Bomb Cyclone?
Contrary to popular belief it is not the name of Kanye West’s new baby, but a severe storm that forms over the ocean. In reality the storm does have a name, just like the summer hurricanes that from in the Atlantic and that name is Grayson. Why Grayson? Who knows. What we do know is that Grayson “The Bomb” Cyclone would make an amazing wrestling name. A cyclone such as this is created due to drastic pressure changes. Basically, a low pressure system is churning away in the ocean and as it strengthens the pressure continues to drop. It is kind of like pushing a balled-up hedgehog down a hill covered in rice krispie treats – it just gets bigger. The pressure drops and sucks in all that nasty weather creating a massive storm system. Batten down the hatches this weekend because we are not out of the woods yet, this storm is going to suck all the cold air out of Canada and dump it right in our lap. You may be thinking, big deal right? Well when it comes to staying safe during this storm, many communities simply need to shut shut the door tight and wait it out. And that is the best thing you can do, with the amount of snow we have gotten it will not be fun to go anywhere anyway.
Once the bomb cyclone passes there will be all sorts of damage due to the massive snowfall and wind, unfortunately the full effects of the storm might not be known until spring. At S&S Roofing we want to help you make sure that your commercial roof is ready for what might be an active spring and summer. Right now is hardly the time to think about roofing but this is the time of year when the most damage can occur, particularly if we have a BOMB cyclone. Many commercial roofs are flat and that makes them particularly vulnerable to inclement weather. When a flat roof is subjected to the 16 inches of snow that we received, this can structurally damage the roof structurally and create a catastrophic failure. The number one enemy of a roof is water. Water intrusion will literally eat a roof from the inside out. When the wind from a storm like Grayson blows hard enough it can tear up pieces of flashing or other roofing materials. This creates little places where water can get in, and once the water gets in it immediately begins to decay the roof. Once the temperature drops, the water in the roof will freeze and destroy the roof though ice expansion.
There are many options to consider once spring hits. If you think that your roof has been compromised by the cyclone and heavy snow, or worse yet is visibly damaged, give S&S Roofing a call as soon as possible. At the time we are able to inspect your roof, we will make educated and fair recommendations about what sort of repair or replacement process that needs to be followed. Our inspections are performed by an industry veteran that is able to assess and deconstruct what must be done to repair your roof. We also offer non-invasive inspection services though our infrared technology. This way we can identify trouble spots in your commercial roof all without tearing into anything.
We anticipate that spring will be an exceptionally busy time of year in 2018 due to this monster of a bomb storm and we will make our best effort to assist every one of our clients. Please contact us with any questions you may have or if you need an emergency repair. Our hope is that all of our customers and their families stay safe during this storm and we thank you for your business.
